No. 1 Nebraska Sweeps Texas; Remains Perfect - Huskers.com - Nebraska Athletics Official Web Site

Lincoln -- Playing for the first time this season as the nation's No. 1-ranked squad, the Nebraska volleyball team remained perfect at 8-0 overall and 1-0 in the Big 12 Conference with a 15-4, 17-15, 15-4 win over Texas Wednesday night at the NU Coliseum. NU, which took over the No. 1 spot in the AVCA/USA Today Coaches Top 25 Poll Sept. 11, is now 41-2 when competing as the nation's top-ranked team. The Huskers have swept six of their eight opponents and are 16-3 in Big Eight/Big 12 openers.

Texas, unranked for the first time in program history, falls to 1-5 on the season on 0-1 in the league.

As they have against all of their opponents this season, the Huskers used a balanced offensive attack to keep the Longhorns off-guard. Junior middle blocker Jenny Kropp pounded a career-high 16 kills on .500 hitting to lead four Nebraska players in double figures. Sophomore outside hitter Laura Pilakowski also had 16 kills.

Sophomore middle blocker Amber Holmquist added 13 kills, and sophomore setter Greichaly Cepero had 10 while guiding the Huskers to a .380 hitting percentage.

The Huskers produced season-high totals for a three-game match in kills (70), attacks (142), assists (59), digs (53), solo blocks (5) and block assists (25).

Nebraska won the first game easily, 15-4. But Texas bounced back in a wild 45-minute second game.

With the score tied at eight, Nebraska slowly built a four-point lead, scoring on a block of Texas' Lisa Lutkus, kills by Holmquist and Kropp, and an ace sere by senior right side hitter Angie Oxley. Texas stormed back, tying the score at 12 behind three kills from Gipy Guarte, who led UT with 16 kills for the match. The squads traded points before a Kropp kill gave the Huskers a 13-12 advantage. A Texas hitting error brought NU to game point, but the Huskers could not convert as they were called for a net violation.

"It reminded me of the Kansas State match last year," NU Coach John Cook said. "Everything just started going wrong. Balls were dropping, and they were scoring on overpasses
