SEVENTH-RANKED HUSKERS DEFEAT
OREGON, 24-17
Portland, Ore.--The Nebraska wrestling
team (10-5) won its 10th dual of the year Friday night at the 16th Annual
Oregon Wrestling Classic in Portland, Ore., with a 24-17 victory over unranked
Oregon. The Huskers won six of the ten matchups with two starters absent
from the lineup.
The Huskers went up 6-0 early with victories by Joe Henson at 149 pounds and Bryan Snyder at 157 pounds. Henson earned a 3-2 decision over Mark Castle, 3-2, and Snyder earned his 20th win of the season with a 6-3 decision over Darryl Christian.
Oregon got on the board in the next matchup, as 165-pounder Sean Morgan pinned Husker freshman Tony Denke two and a half minutes into the match to tie the dual at 6-6.
Sophomore Charles McTorry countered with a win at 174 pounds for the Huskers over Shawn O'Rourke, 9-4.
At 184 pounds, Oregon's 17th-ranked Doug Lee upset NU's seventh-ranked Brad Vering, 5-2. Ninth-ranked Chael Sonnen defeated 15th-ranked Husker Scott Munson, 14-6, at 197 pounds to give the Ducks a 12-9 lead.
But Nebraska finished the meet with three wins, two coming from forfeits. Heavyweight J.R. Plienis won 6-3 over Kevin Keeney, before sixth-rated 125-pounder Paul Gomez and 133-pounder Todd Beckerman won by forfeit. In the meet's final match, Oregon's David Watson earned a major decision over freshman Travis Vandever, who wrestled for usual starter Jose DeAnda.
Nebraska wrestles Oregon State late Friday night. Results from that meet will be available Sunday.

NO. 7 NU WRESTLERS BEAT 18TH-RANKED OREGON

Portland, Ore.--The seventh-ranked
Nebraska wrestling team (11-5) won its second of two dual meets at the
16th Annual Oregon Wrestling Classic in Portland, Ore., late Friday night
with a 19-12 victory over 18th-ranked Oregon State. Nebraska defeated
unranked Oregon, 24-17, earlier in the evening to finish the meet 2-0.
The Beavers got on the board first with a win at 149 pounds. Oscar Wood, ranked No. 1 nationally in the weight class, downed 15th-ranked Joe Henson, 6-1. Freshman Husker Bryan Snyder, ranked seventh in the nation in the latest InterMat poll, won his 21st match of the season with an 8-4 decision over 16th-ranked Eric Jorgenson at 157 pounds.
Nathan Coy earned a 5-1 decision over Tony Denke in the 165-pound matchup to give Oregon State its last lead of the match, 6-3. Charles McTorry, Brad Vering and Scott Munson followed with three straight wins for the Huskers. McTorry earned his second straight victory over Clint Wilson, 7-4. Munson joined teammate Snyder as the team co-leader in wins with 21 with a 9-8 decision over 14th-ranked Shane Zajac. Vering, ranked seventh nationally earned win No. 16 against Isaac Weber, 10-3
In the heavyweight division, Oregon State's sixth-ranked Mat Orndorff upended 12th-ranked J.R. Plienis, 5-2.
Paul Gomez, the sixth-ranked 125-pounder, saw his first action since the fourth round of the Cliff Keen NWCA National Duals last weekend and picked up an 11-3 major decision over 18th-ranked Nathan Navarro. Todd Beckerman added a win at 133 pounds, as well for the Huskers, defeating Ben Richards, 13-5.
Nebraska moves to 11-5 with the win and is now 6-5 against ranked squads this season. Oregon State, who entered the meet with five wrestlers ranked in the Top 20, dropped to 9-5 overall.
The Huskers will host Air Force in a "home away from home" dual on Sunday in Ogallala, Neb. NU faces the Falcons at 2 p.m. MST.
