Snyder Leads Husker Wrestlers at Korean University National Cham

Lincoln - Nebraska's 157-pound Bryan Snyder led three Huskers who were competing on the Big 12 All-Stars Overseas Freestyle Wrestling Team Friday (June 11) at the Korean Unviersity National Championships.

Snyder, an All-American and Big 12 Champion as a Husker freshman in 1999, placed second in the Korean tournament with a 3-1 record at 76 kilos.

NU's Brad Vering and Todd Beckerman each earned third-place finishes. Vering's lone loss of the tournament came to Sanderson in the semifinals of the 85-kilo bracket, 11-8, as the Husker sophomore finished with a 2-1 record. Beckerman completed action with a 2-2 record at 58 kilo, including an 8-4 win over Oklahoma State's Teague Moore, who finished at 1-1.

Cael Sanderson of Iowa State and John Henry Ward of Oklahoma led the Big 12 All-Stars Overseas Freestyle Wrestling Team with first-place finishes.

Sanderson, a national and conference champion at 184 pounds in 1999, earned outstanding wrestler honors for the upper weights after finishing first at 85 kilos (184 pounds) with a 4-0 record. Ward, a 1999 All-American and conference champion at heavyweight, finished the tournament with a perfect 2-0 record and the team's second first-place award.

In other action, Iowa State's Zach Thompson added a runnerup finish with a 3-1 record in the 97-kilo (197-pound) competition, Missouri's Jason Moore finished 1-1 at 85 kilos and Oklahoma's Michael Lightner, an NCAA runnerup and conference champion at 141 pounds, finished 1-2 with a win over the eventual champion and outstanding wrestler for the lighter weights.

Big 12 All-Stars Coach Tim Neumann was pleased with the team's effort.

"This was just a great experience for everyone involved," Neumann said. "These athletes wrestled well, had a lot of fun, and represented the Big 12 Conference with a high level of integrity and commitment."
