Three Husker Wrestlers Advance at Korean University National Cha

Korea - Three Husker wrestlers who are members of the first Big 12 All-Stars Overseas Freestyle Wrestling Tour advanced in the championship bracket of the Korean University National Championships Thursday in Korea.

Sophomores Todd Beckerman, Bryan Snyder and Brad Vering each went undefeated during the first day of the two-day tournament. Beckerman won his pool and will compete in the 58-kilo (133-pound) quarterfinals Friday, while Snyder (76 kilos/157 pounds) and Vering (85 kilos/184 pounds) will wrestle in the semifinals. Vering will face All-Star teammate Cael Sanderson of Iowa State in Friday's first match.

In other action scheduled for Friday, Oklahoma's John Henry Ward will compete in the heavyweight finals.

The remainder of the 11-member team has either completed their competition or is out of the tournament. Iowa State's Zach Thompson finished second at 97 kilos (197 pounds), and Oklahoma State's Reggie Wright finished second in his pool at 69 kilos (149 pounds).

"Everyone represented themselves very well," Big 12 All-Stars Coach and Nebraska Head Coach Tim Neumann said. "We are hoping to have a good day tomorrow and come away with a couple of champions."

The overseas tour is sponsored by USA Wrestling and the Big 12 Conference. Funding for the trip was received in 1997 when the conference was awarded a grant from the United States Olympic Committee and the NCAA. In turn, the Big 12 will host a foreign team in May 2000.
