College Station, Texas-- Jenny Benson's penalty kick 22 minutes into the contest was all fourth-ranked Nebraska needed as the Huskers downed No. 8 Texas A&M, 1-0, Friday evening in front of school-record crowd of 2,757 at the Aggie Sports Complex.
With the win, the Huskers (9-1-1) moved atop the Big 12 standings with a 3-0 conference mark. NU's win, coupled with Missouri's 4-1 loss to Texas Tech earlier today, leaves the Huskers as the only undefeated team in the Big 12 as Texas A&M (9-2, 3-1 Big 12) and Missouri (7-3, 2-1) each have one conference loss.
The Huskers got on the scoreboard midway through the first half as Benson converted a penalty kick past Aggie goalkeeper Melanie Wilson for her second goal of the season. Benson's shot went into the lower right corner past a diving Wilson, giving the Huskers the margin of victory.
The win, NU's fifth over a top-25 team this season, was the Huskers' first-ever win in College Station and A&M's first home loss since a 3-0 setback to Santa Clara on Oct. 18, 1998.
"Our pressure created a lot of chances, and it would have been nice to put them away," Nebraska Coach John Walker said. "But we were able to do the things we needed to do to get the win, and that is really all that counts when you are on the road. I've never won down here. So I think it is great"
Junior goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc kept the Aggies at bay, making a season-high seven stops. A&M's best opportunity came in the 35th minute as LeBlanc stopped Jamie Marden's shot from 15-yards out, making a spectacular diving save.
Texas A&M kept the pressure on in the final minute, as Michelle Royal fired a shot from 35 yards out, but LeBlanc preserved her sixth shutout of the season, making her seventh and final save as time expired.
Walker was also extremely pleased with the Huskers' defensive effort.
"Our defenders were unbelieveable tonight and Karina handled everything flawlessy," Walker said.
The Huskers travel to Austin, Texas, to face the Longhorns this Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Texas (5-4, 2-2)lost to Iowa State, 3-1, Friday evening in Austin.
