NU Impresses in Win Over ISU

Ames, Iowa -- Taking the top three spots in the all-around, the seventh-ranked Nebraska women's gymnastics team opened Big 12 Conference action with an impressive 195.65-194.475 victory over No. 10 Iowa State Friday evening in front of 1,499 fans at the Hilton Coliseum.

The Huskers posted their best score ever for a second meet of a season, bettering the previous high of 193.725 set in 1997. The Huskers improved to 3-3 on the season and 1-0 in the Big 12. With the loss, ISU dips to 1-1 on the year and 1-1 in the Big 12.

Nebraska was paced by senior All-American Heather Brink (Lincoln, Neb.), who recorded three event wins. The senior finished first on the vault (9.925) and uneven bars (9.85), while placing second on floor exercise (9.85) en route to a season-high score of 39.375 in the all-around. Her score tied for the eighth-best total in school history.

Joining Brink in the all-around were junior Amy Ringo (Phoenix, Ariz.) and freshman A.J. Lamb (Lincoln, Neb.), who finished second and third with scores of 39.125 and 39.075, respectively. Both Ringo, who tied freshman Jess Wertz (Lebanon, Ohio) for third on floor exercise, and Lamb, who finished second on vault with a 9.80, set personal bests in the all-around.

Senior Nicole Wilkinson (London, Ontario) rounded out the Husker individual event champions, tying Iowa State's Kelli More for first place on balance beam with a 9.875.

The Huskers turned in a consistent performance in leading from start to finish. NU scored 48.90 or better on all four events, and did not count a fall in posting their 10th straight victory over their conference rival.

Nebraska returns to competition next Friday, Jan. 21, as the Huskers travel to Ariel Sands, Bermuda, to compete in the Bermuda Triangle Challenge, beginning at 5 p.m. (CST). The meet also features North Carolina State, Brown and Cornell. The Huskers' first home meet of the season is Saturday, Jan. 29, when the Huskers play host to Missouri beginning at noon in the Devaney Center.
