Nebraska Breaks Open Close Game Late to Take Series Finale, 12-4

Manhattan, Kan. -- Nebraska junior first baseman Dan Johnson opened up a close 5-4 game in the top of the eighth inning with a three-run home run as the Huskers won the season series with Kansas State, 12-4, at Frank Myers Field on Sunday.

Nebraska jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning as designated hitter Matt Hopper led off the inning with a solo shot to right field. NU added to the lead with two runs in the third inning as third baseman Will Bolt singled home outfielder Justin Cowan followed by catcher Aaron Gozart's fielder's choice that scored second baseman John Cole.

With the Nebraska holding a 3-0 lead, Kansas State responded in the bottom of the third inning as junior catcher Graham McAllister belted his first home run of the season with a two-RBI bomb over the scoreboard in right field to close the gap to 3-2.

After Nebraska added runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-2 lead, the Wildcats again responded as McAllister turned a bunt down the third base line into a base hit to get things started in the fifth inning. After a walk by junior outfielder Kasey Weishaar Travis Andre hit an RBI single to score McAllister. Weishaar would score later as J.D. Loudabarger singled him home to cut the lead to 5-4.

The game would remain close until Dan Johnson's three-run home run in the eighth inning gave Nebraska an 8-4 lead. NU added four more runs in the ninth for the final 12-4 win.

Nebraska reliever R.D. Spiehs picked up the win as he allowed no runs on four hits with two strikeouts in 4.1 innings of relief.

Hopper had a field day with KSU pitching, going 4-for-6 with a homer and a double. Justin Cowan continued his hot hitting, going 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, three runs scored, and his 10th double of the season. In all, Nebraska had nine players combine for 16 hits.

Jamal Strong extended his hitting streak to 11 games and his string of reaching base to 36 straight games. He has recorded a hit in 28 of his last 29 games.
