DALLAS -- Nebraska senior Heather Brink was honored as Big 12 Conference Gymnast of the Week for March 7 and Iowa State junior Betsy Hamm was named Big 12 Conference Gymnast of the Week for March 14, the Big 12 Conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Brink won the all-around title with a 39.55 at Oregon State's Shanico Inn-vitational on March 3. The Lincoln, Neb., native picked up her Big 12-leading sixth all-around title of the season, including her fourth in five meets. She posted the fifth-best all-around total in school history, tying the meet record held by Oregon State's Chari Knight in 1992. Brink also tied Nebraska's school record on floor exercise with a 9.95, including a 10 from one judge. She finished second on vault (9.95), fifth on uneven bars (9.85) and sixth on balance beam (9.80) in helping the Huskers to a then school-record score of 196.80. In addition Brink was awarded the scholar-athlete award for the competition, which combines meet scores and grade point average for the fall semester.
Hamm recorded a school-record score of 39.600 in winning the all-around against Missouri. She set a school record and career-high on uneven bars with a first-place score of 9.950. On the beam, Hamm recorded a 9.925 to tie her career-high and tie for the second-highest score in school history. The Waukesha, Wis., native won the floor exercise with a season-high 9.925. Four days later against Minnesota, Hamm tied her career-high and school-record score of 9.950 on the bars and tied her season-high of 9.925 on floor exercise.
The Big 12 Conference Gymnastics Championship will be held this Saturday, March 18, in Ames, Iowa, at Hilton Coliseum. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for youth. The meet begins at 8 p.m. and will be telecast tape-delayed by FOX Sports Net. Please check local listings for telecast times in your area.
