Lincoln -- The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee snapped 15th-ranked Nebraska's 15-game win streak Tuesday, holding off the Huskers for a 9-7 win at Buck Beltzer Stadium. The Panthers (16-17) jumped on top of the Huskers (33-12) scoring nine runs through the first four innings to take a 9-0 lead. Nebraska rallied but stranded 13 batters to waste a terrific relief performance from senior Trevor Bullock, who threw five perfect innings, striking out six batters in 5.1 innings. The win also snapped a 13-game home winning streak for Nebraska and the longest win streak in Big 12 history.
Husker starter Brian Rodaway struggled out of the gate, allowing three hits and two runs in the first before retiring the second in order. But the Panthers got started again in the third tagging Rodaway for three hits, including a double to jump ahead, 4-0. After a one-run single from Steve Tylke chased Rodaway from the game, reliever Dave Schneider gave up a three-run home run to Todd Ludwig, his third of the season. UWM added three consecutive hits in the fourth, including an RBI double from Chad Sadowski to extend its lead to 9-0, before NU Head Coach Dave Van Horn replaced Schneider with Bullock. Bullock walked his first batter before slamming the door on the Panthers, retiring the final 16 batters of the game.
Nebraska put up its biggest rally in the fifth inning scoring five runs, taking advantage of four walks. Josh Hesse hit a one-out double and scored on an RBI single from Adam Stern After a groundout scored Adam Shabala, who walked, Dan Johnson singled and NU drew two straight walks to load the bases. Will Bolt answered with a two-out, two-run single to pull Nebraska within four at 9-5. But Hesse flew out to centerfield with the bases loaded to end the inning.
Nebraska left runners at first and second in the sixth, before scoring in the seventh. Bolt drew a one-out walk and scored two batters later on an RBI single from Hesse. Justin Cowan grounded out to end the inning with bases loaded.
Nebraska went in order in the eighth but made a charge in the ninth. Bolt led the inning off with a single to left center and reached second after shortstop Scott Gillitzer dropped a possible double-play ball hit by Jeff Leise, giving Nebraska runners at first and second with no outs.
Closer Eric Goerdt threw two wild pitches, the second on a walk to Shabala, to score Bolt and put Leise on third. But with runners at the corners, Stern grounded out into a double play to end the game. Goerdt, the sixth UWM pitcher of the game, earned his second save of the season.
