Lincoln -- Breaking several offensive school records, the fifth-ranked Nebraska soccer team trounced Arkansas-Little Rock, 11-0, Sunday afternoon at the Abbott Sports Complex. The Huskers (2-0-0) posted a school-record 30 shots on goal in their home opener, outshooting the Trojans 59-1, before a crowd of 618.
"It gave us a chance to give the younger players some quality minutes," Nebraska Head Coach John Walker said, "and they did a pretty good job. I was pleased with the types of goals we scored."
Senior defender Christine Gluck notched the Huskers' first goal 11:44 into the contest, helping the Huskers build a 7-0 halftime lead. NU senior goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc, who played just the first half, did not see a shot in posting her second shutout in as many games this season.
Junior midfielder Meghan Anderson recorded back-to-back goals, followed by scoring shots from sophomore forward Christine Latham, freshman midfielder Christy Harms and back-to-back goals from sophomore forward Brooke Jones. Harms' first-career goal at 28:50 was followed by Jones' first goal of the season 20 seconds later (29:10), marking the shortest span between goals in school history. The previous mark of 35 seconds was set last season at Colorado.
In the second half, Latham added her second goal of the game and third of the season, followed by scores from senior defender Jenny Benson, junior forward Becky Preston and freshman midfielder Lacey Woolf.
"This is what our team needs to get our confidence up," said LeBlanc, a preseason All-American, "especially for the younger players."
The Huskers' 11 goals tied the school record, which was set in an 11-0 victory over Loyola-Chicago on Sept. 25, 1998. NU's 11-point margin of victory also tied a school record.
Nebraska will continue its five-game homestand playing host to Southwest Missouri State on Tuesday, Aug. 29, in a 7 p.m. contest at the Abbott Sports Complex. The game will air on KLIN (1400 AM).
