Storrs, Conn. -- Senior Karina LeBlanc and the Husker defense held 20th ranked Connecticut scoreless, as the third-ranked Nebraska soccer team rolled to a 2-0 victory in the UConn Classic at Morrone Stadium Sunday afternoon.
LeBlanc recorded a season-high eight saves, leading Nebraska to its sixth shutout victory in eight contests. With the win, NU improves to 8-0-0, while the Huskies fell to 3-2-1.
"It was an excellent game," Nebraska Coach John Walker said. "I was most satisified with the battling we did out there. It was a tough win on the road."
Husker junior forward Danica Carey came off the bench and broke open the scoreless game at 41:37 amid a scramble in the box following a corner kick. Freshman midfielder Lindsey Greenwood notched her third assist on the play, as Carey recorded her second goal of the season. The Huskers outcornered UConn 6-0 in the first half and out shot them, 8-5, before intermission.
The Huskers struck again at the beginning of the second half when Najah Williams scored her second goal of the season on a ball that bounced off the crossbar and past Husky goalkeeper Maria Watrakis at the 49:33 mark. In all, NU out shot Connecticut 16-13, and have not allowed a goal in three road wins this season.
The Huskers return to action this Friday, Sept. 22, when the Huskers travel to Baylor for a Big 12 contest before returning to face in-state rival Creighton next Sunday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. Sunday's match will be broadcast by KLIN Radio.
