Huskers Fall to UConn in Third Round of NCAA Tournament

Lincoln, Neb. -- The second-ranked Nebraska Soccer team ended its season Friday with a 1-0 loss to No. 13 Connecticut in the third round of the NCAA Tournament before a crowd of 661 at the Abbott Sports Complex. The Huskers finished the season at 22-2, while the Huskies improved to 17-6-2.

Though Nebraska outshot Connecticut, 20-16, the Huskies managed the game's lone goal when junior forward Alexa Borisjuk fired a scoring shot from the top of the box at 38:00. Sophomore forward Sarah Popper earned the assist. In all, NU booted nine shots on goal to the Huskies' four shots on goal. The Huskers outcornered Uconn, 6-0.

"Anytime you're down a goal against a good team, it's tough," Nebraska Head Coach John Walker said. "They're an excellent team. In terms of talent and ability to move the ball, they're probably as good as anybody."

The Huskers came close to putting a ball in the net on a scramble in the box near the goal line late in the second half. Junior forward Danica Carey and sophomore midfielder Kori Saunders both fired shots in the scramble to no avail.

NU also came close to scoring in the fist half on a fast break by sophomore forward Christine Latham, who ended up sliding into a diving Maria Yatrakis just wide of the right post. Yatrakis, a sophomore goalkeeper, made nine saves for the Huskies.

Latham finished the season with 57 points - the second-best-individual offensive output in Nebraska school history. The Calgary, Alberta, native fired a team-high five shots against UConn.

Husker senior Karina LeBlanc made three saves, finishing the season with a goals-against average of 0.40 - the best in school history. LeBlanc finished her career with a goals-against average of 0.54, which ranks seventh in NCAA history. NU also recorded a school-record 16 shutouts this year.

"We definitely didn't look past this game at all, but we didn't think it was going to end here," Nebraska junior forward Kelly Rheem said. "It's tough, especially thinking that we'll never play with these seniors here again."
