Lincoln -- The Nebraska women's gymnastics team will have an intrasquad scrimmage this Friday, Dec. 1, at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, beginning at 7 p.m. The scrimmage is free to the public and schedule cards will be available.
The Huskers return seven letterwinners, including All-Americans Amy Ringo (Phoenix, Ariz.), A.J. Lamb (Lincoln, Neb.) and Julie Houk (Hamilton, Ohio), from last season's team that placed fourth at the NCAA Championships, equaling the program's best finish in school history. Friday's meet will also mark the return of sophomore Bree Dority O'Callaghan (Kearney, Neb.), who was the Big 12 Freshman of the Year in 1999 before suffering a knee injury and missing most of last season.
Last year, the Huskers finished with a 25-5 record and won their first regional title since 1983, tying a school record with a score of 196.875 at regionals. The Huskers, who placed second at the Big 12 Championships, were ranked as high as third during the season and had five All-Americans, including two-time NCAA champion and Honda Award winner Heather Brink.
Nebraska opens its 2001 schedule on Jan. 5, when the Huskers travel to Hawaii for the Maui Invitational against defending NCAA champion UCLA and Arizona State. The Huskers begin the home portion of their schedule on Sunday, Jan. 14, against Oregon State at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
