San Antonio, Texas - Junior midfielder Meghan Anderson scored two goals and sophomore forward Christine Latham notched two assists as the third-ranked Nebraska soccer team shut out Baylor, 4-0, in a rainy second-round of the Big 12 Tournament on Friday before a crowd of 752 at Blossom Soccer Complex. The top-seeded Huskers, who improved to 20-1-0, will play ninth-ranked Texas A&M (17-5-0) in Saturday's championship game at 7:30 p.m.
Senior goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc lowered her goals-against average to 0.36, helping Nebraska post its' school-record 15th shutout of the season. LeBlanc has now recorded 355:44 consecutive scoreless minutes.
"We played with a lot of energy," Nebraska Coach John Walker said. "It was a good, solid performance. We were able to play a lot of players. That will come in to play tomorrow."
Junior forward Kelly Rheem put the Huskers on the board at 13:36 when she chipped a shot over Baylor goalkeeper Dawn Greathouse, a first-team All-Big 12 selection. Greathouse got a hand on the ball, but tipped it deeper into the net. Latham, the Big 12 Conference player of the year, earned the assist.
Greathouse, who recorded seven saves in the effort, moved to forward with just over six minutes remaining in the half. Following the move, Anderson took a pass from Latham and drilled a shot past BU goalkeeper Emily Koch at 43:38, giving the Huskers a 2-0 advantage at the half.
"Their coach told me (Greathouse) is one of their fastest players," Walker said. "At this point in the season, you have nothing to lose. She played well."
Anderson scored again at 78:00, booting a rocket past Koch from the top of the penalty area after a Baylor player deflected a Paige Phillips corner kick away from the goal. Anderson, who recorded her 10th career multiple-goal game, has scored 36 points this season. Latham, who upped her season total to 53 points, has now scored a total of 15 points in two Big 12 Tournaments - a Husker career record.
Freshman forward Christy Harms headed in the Huskers' final goal past Koch at 80:41, following a cross from senior defender Jenny Benson. Harms has now scored 18 points this season on seven goals and four assists.
Nebraska outshot the Bears, 24-10, and outcornered Baylor, 11-2.
No. 2 seed Texas A&M defeated Oklahoma, 1-0, before the Huskers took the field on Friday. Nebraska defeated the Aggies, 2-1, in Lincoln on Oct. 8. The two teams played for the conference championship in 1996 and 1997. NU knocked off A&M, 1-0, in 1996, while the Aggies defeated Nebraska, 3-1, in 1997.
The Huskers claimed conference tournament titles in 1996, 1998 and 1999. NU won regular-season titles in 1996, 1999 and 2000.
