Lincoln - Nebraska freshman Tami Harris was name the Big 12 Gymnast of the week after her performance in the Huskers' win over No. 10 Florida, the league office announced Wednesday. The Virginia Beach, Va., native produced her most complete performance of the season against the Gators on Sunday, earning top five finishes on three events. Harris captured the first all-around title of her career with a personal best score of 39.45, and claimed runner-up honors on vault with a 9.875. She tied for third with NU's Alecia Ingram on the uneven bars (9.925), and finished fifth on the balance beam (9.825). She also finished ninth on floor with a 9.825. Harris' award is the fourth for Nebraska this season.
Harris' achievements came on the heels of a stellar showing at the Masters Classic where she established a new Masters Classic record on the uneven bars with a 9.975. Her mark was the highest ever by a Husker freshman on any event, and tied the school record held by All-American Heather Brink.
After spending four consecutive weeks at No. 6 in the NACGC poll, Nebraska moved up one place to fifth this week, tying its highest ranking of the season. In its last five meets, Nebraska has topped 197 four times, including a school record 197.375 at the Masters Classic. Until this season, no team in Nebraska history had ever scored a 197 - the Huskers have bettered 197 in each of their last three meets.
In its last regular season home meet, Nebraska will battle No. 11 Iowa State Monday, March 7, at the Bob Devaney Sports Center at 7 p.m.
