Anderson, Carey Score as Huskers Top Alabama-Birmingham

Lincoln, Neb. -- For the second consecutive game, senior midfielders Meghan Anderson and Danica Carey both scored goals for the Huskers as the fifth-ranked Nebraska soccer team defeated Alabama-Birmingham, 2-1, at the Abbott Sports Complex on Sunday.

The Huskers fired 45 shots in the effort, including 15 on goal, while holding the Blazers to four shots before a crowd of 1,334. NU improved to 2-0-0, and knocked UAB to 0-2-0.

"It was just one of those nights," Nebraska Head Coach John Walker said. "We just need to do a better job putting chances away. We have to be more efficient. We'll just keep plugging away at it."

Alabama-Birmingham freshman forward Tara Kidwell put the Blazers on the board first at 7:17, but the Huskers struck back minutes later when Anderson scored her third goal of the season. All three of Anderson's goals this year have come on free kicks. The Omaha, Neb., native, who scored two goals against Arizona on Friday, totaled seven points over the weekend.

Carey scored her second game-winning goal in as many games when she headed a ball in following a scramble in the box at 19:54.

"It was bouncing around and I was just in the right place at the right time," Carey said.

The San Diego, Calif., native, who made her first two career starts this weekend, also posted the game-winner against Arizona on Friday.

"It was disappointing because we didn't put it away," Carey said. "It's something that should iron out as the season goes along. It looks promising as long as we get those kinks out."

NU first-year goalkeeper Erin Miller, a sophomore who posted two saves, earned her second career victory. Blazer junior goalkeeper Lisa Nowoslawski notched 12 saves in the effort, and saw a Nebraska all-time-individual-high 12 shots from junior forward Christine Latham.

The Huskers will next face 19th-ranked USC in Los Angeles on Sunday, Sept. 9., at 3 p.m.
