South Bend, Ind. -- The third-ranked Nebraska soccer team fell to fourth-ranked Notre Dame, 1-0, in a physical contest Tuesday evening at Alumni Field. Senior midfielder Mia Sarkesian scored the lone goal at 17:30, as the Huskers slipped to 5-1-0. The Fighting Irish improved to 6-0-1.
"It was a good, hard, competitive contest," Nebraska Head Coach John Walker said. "It came down to set plays. They finished one and we didn't. It was a good test for us."
The Huskers, who were outshot, 13-7, came close to putting a ball in the net several times in the second half -- including two near misses by junior forward Christine Latham with just under 30 minutes remaining in the game. Despite being outshot, Nebraska outcornered the Fighting Irish, 8-4
Sarkesian, who scored from seven yards out on a scramble in the box, had another scoring chance on a penalty kick at 64:06, but first-year Husker goalkeeper Erin Miller prevailed, wrapping up the rebound off the post.
Miller, a sophomore, recorded a career-high nine saves in the effort, lowering her goals-against average to 1.20. The Sioux Falls, S.D., native has surrendered just two goals in her last 255:12.
NU's last loss on the road came in South Bend on Nov. 20, 1998. The Huskers are now 0-3-1 in the all-time series against Notre Dame.
Nebraska will play host to Baylor on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Abbott Sports Complex.
