Lincoln, Neb. -- Junior forward Christine Latham notched her third multiple-goal game of the season as the third-ranked Nebraska soccer team bounced back from a loss to Notre Dame with a 4-0 win over Baylor before a crowd of 1,145 at the Abbott Sports Complex on Friday evening.
The Huskers improved to 6-1-0, opening conference play with a win for the sixth consecutive season. Nebraska has never lost a league opener. Baylor fell to 4-3-0 and 0-1-0 in conference action.
"We created
a lot of scoring opportunities," Nebraska Head Coach John Walker said,
"but with the chances we had, we'd like to finish a little more."
Senior forward Kelly Rheem put the Huskers on the board with a quick strike from short range at 2:56. Latham followed with a goal at 33:52 after beating several Bears in the box, giving the Huskers a 2-0 halftime lead. The Huskers fired 11 shots in the first half, but launched 21 in the second period, outshooting Baylor, 32-5. NU outcornered BU, 9-0.
Latham stuck again at 83:53 off the rebound of a Meghan Anderson shot, giving Latham a team-high 14 points on six goals and two assists. All of her goals have come in Nebraska's last four games. The Calgary, Alberta, native has scored 14 points on six goals and two assists in four career games against Baylor -- including three multiple-goal games.Latham earned Big 12 Player of the Year honors in 2000, scoring 57 points.
First-year goalkeeper Erin Miller, a sophomore, posted her first career shutout, recording three saves in the effort. Miller, who lowered her goals-against average to 1.02, has surrendered just two goals in her last 345:12, dating back to Sept. 21.
"I think I could have dome some things better," Miller said. "But it's my first shutout, and it feels pretty good."
Sophomore forward Christy Harms added the Huskers' last goal of the game at 86:06, following a 35-yard pass from Miller. Harms sped past two Baylor defenders and fired her second goal of the season. The Blue Springs, Mo., native has scored six points on two goals and two assists this year.
Nebraska now leads the all-time series with Baylor, 8-1. The Bears have never scored a goal at the Abbott Sports Complex in three contests.
The Huskers will return to action on Friday, Oct. 5, in a 7 p.m. contest against Missouri at the Abbott Sports Complex.
