The Nebraska soccer team opened its spring season with a tie against the Region III team on Friday, Feb. 22, before defeating the Canadian Under-20 team on Sunday, Feb. 24, in Austin, Texas.
"It was a good start to the spring," Nebraska Head Coach John Walker said. "We're not really concerned with the results, as much as the performance and the effort. Overall, it was a good weekend."
Paige Phillips, a junior next fall, scored a goal for the Huskers in a 1-1 tie with the Region III team, while senior Christine Latham and sophomore Iman Haynes scored goals in a 2-0 victory over the Canadian Under-20 team.
Phillips scored seven points on two goals and three assists in 2001. Latham, the 2000 and 2001 Big 12 Player of the Year, led the conference with 46 points on 18 goals and 10 assists last season. Haynes, hampered by a knee injury late last fall, saw action in 14 contests, scoring the first goal of her career against Evansville on Sept. 23.
The Huskers, who made their sixth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament's round of 16 last fall, will return to action against the Atlanta Beat of the Women's United Soccer Association on March 10, in Atlanta, Ga.
