Christine Latham and the No. 10 Nebraska soccer team controlled the first half of play against the Drake Bulldogs for a 4-0 victory Tuesday night at the Abbott Sports Complex with 431 fans in attendance.
The win improves Nebraska’s season record to 3-2-1 and drops Drake to 2-3-1.
The Huskers began the game sluggishly, but picked it up ten minutes into the game when Latham scored the first goal at the 10:28 mark. Paige Phillip set up the play sending the ball to Jenna Cooper off of a corner kick and Latham took the pass and headed the ball into the right side of the net.
After scoring the first goal, the Huskers dominated the last 35 minutes of the half, scoring the final three goals of the game.
Sophomore Lindsey Ingram scored her first goal of the season in the 26th minute when Latham sent her a pass in the center of the box. Ingram went one-on-one with Drake goalkeeper, Kate Stack and put the ball straight into goal.
The Huskers received help from the Drake defense on the final two goals of the game, with a Drake player knocking in the third goal with confusion in the box.
Breanna Boyd scored the final goal of the game, on a Jenna Cooper assist that bounced off the head of a Drake defender into perfect position for Boyd to score.
"We need to work on defense and a little better organization and communication," Coach John Walker said. "We definitely wanted to play a lot of our young players, and that will help us down the road."
The Husker defense held the Bulldogs without a shot for the first half, but Drake refused to go away in the second half. The Bulldogs had three shots on goal on six shots in the second half.
Drake played much stronger in the second period, giving the Huskers a battle on the offensive and defensive ends of the field.
"They are a good team," Walker said. "Looking at their results coming in and looking at their shots, you can tell they are a well organized team and they fought hard."
Nebraska took 18 shots on the game and tallied eight shots on goal. The Huskers took nine corner kicks to Drake’s zero.
Nebraska goalkeeper Erin Miller recorded her 10th career shutout and her third this season, while posting three saves in the contest. Drake goalkeeper, Stack, made four saves against the Nebraska offense.
The Huskers return to action at the Abbott Sports Complex Friday night at 7 p.m. when they take on in-state rival Creighton. Nebraska will also face Indiana State Sunday at 1 p.m.
