Latham Becomes Nebraska All-Time Points Leader; Nebraska Soccer Ties Kansas, 1-1

Senior Christine Latham scored the Huskers' only goal and became the school's all-time points leader as the 18th-ranked Nebraska soccer team tied Kansas, 1-1, Sunday afternoon at SuperTarget field in Lawrence, Kan. <?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

Kansas opened the scoring with a shot from Caroline Smith 20 minutes into the second half on an assist from Amy Geha.

Just a minute and a half later NU freshman Aly Scace beat a Jayhawk defender to get the ball to Latham who was in scoring position.  The goal was Latham's seventh of the season and brought her total career points to 147, overtaking former Husker Meghan Anderson's school record (146).

"It's not surprising (Latham's record)," Coach John Walker said.  "She plays hard every game and she has been very consistent over her career."

The tie drops the Huskers to a 5-2-3 overall record and 1-0-1 in Big 12 play, while Kansas moves to 7-1-2 and 1-0-1 in the conference.

"It was a grueling affair," Walker said.  "It was an end-to-end game. They had a great crowd and it was a tough game."

Neither team was able to get off many shots, with Kansas outshooting Nebraska, 20-15.  The Huskers also put up eight shots on goal to the Jayhawks' 11.  Nebraska also outcornered the Jayhawks, 6-1

Nebraska goalkeeper Erin Miller recorded nine saves on the afternoon, while KU's goalkeeper, Meghan Miller, posted seven saves.

The Kansas game marks the third time this season the Huskers have ended a game in a tie.  Nebraska has never had three tie games in one year prior to the 2002 season.

Nebraska had dominated the Jayhawks coming into the game, with an 8-0-0 all-time record over KU.

"This gives us a taste of how fairly contested the conference is going to be," Walker said.  "We had two rough road games (this weekend), but we are healthy and got some tough games under our belt.  It is going to be important to play well against every team in the conference."

Nebraska returns home for games against Texas and Texas A&M at the Abbott Sports Complex next weekend.  The Huskers face the Longhorns Friday night at 7 p.m. and the Aggies Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on KRNU 90.3 and on the internet at www.Huskers.com.
