Red/White Scrimmage Scheduled for Saturday

Lincoln -- The Nebraska volleyball team will hold its annual Red/White Scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m. Tickets for the event can be purchased online at Huskers.com, or by calling the Nebraska Ticket Office at 1-800-8BIGRED. Tickets will also be sold at the door. The cost is $4 for adults and $2 for students.

The scrimmage will be Nebraska fans' only opportunity to see the seventh-ranked Huskers compete at the Coliseum before their home- opening weekend Sept. 12-14, when they take on No. 14 Santa Clara, No. 25 Michigan State and No. 12 Georgia Tech in the US Bank/Arby's Classic. NU will spend the first two weeks of the 2003 season on the road. The Huskers travel to Normal, Ill., for the Illinois State Barker GMC Classic Aug. 29-30, before a Sept. 5-6 trip to New Orleans for the Nokia Sugar Bowl Classic.

Nebraska, which finished 2002 ranked fifth in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches poll with a 31-2 record, will open the season with a much different look. For the first time in three years, the Huskers will be without its nucleus of All-Americans Greichaly Cepero, Amber Holmquist and Laura Pilakowski. However, NU returns three starters from its 2002 lineup, including senior outside hitter and preseason Big 12 Co-Player of the Year Anna Schrad, sophomore middle blocker Melissa Elmer and sophomore outside hitter Jennifer Saleaumua, who joined Schrad on the preseason All-Big 12 team.

Other returning letterwinners include senior libero Jenae Dowling, senior middle blocker Sara Westling, junior outside hitter Ally Rebholz and sophomore setter Michelle Lynch. They will be joined by a talented freshman class that includes outside hitter Kelsey Fautsch, who redshirted in 2002, setter Dani Busboom, middle blocker Christina Houghtelling and outside hitters Dani Mancuso and Emily Schroeder.

NU head coach John Cook will begin his fourth season at the helm. During his three seasons as the Husker head coach, Cook has guided Nebraska to a 96-4 overall record, a 60-0 Big 12 mark, two NCAA semifinal apppearances and the 2000 national championship.
