Lincoln -- Senior middle blocker Sara Westling had 19 kills, and sophomore outside hitter Jennifer Saleaumua added 15 Saturday night at the NU Coliseum, as the red team beat the white team in five games, 30-16, 30-26, 23-30, 21-30, 15-12, in the Nebraska volleyball team's preseason intra-squad scrimmage.
Coach John Cook stocked the red squad with the Huskers' starting lineup in the first two games before Westling, Saleaumua and senior libero Jenae Dowling moved across the net.
With the fifth game tied at 10-10, the red team took the lead for good on a solo block and kill by junior outside hitter Ally Rebholz. Senior outside hitter Anna Schrad finished the match with a kill.
Before a crowd of 2,308, former Huskers Laura Pilakowski and Lindsay Wischmeier played well for the white team. Pilakowski pounded 20 kills, and Wischmeier, the Huskers' volunteer student coach, contributed a match-high 49 set assists.
Junior Michelle Lynch and freshman Dani Busboom split the setting duties for the victorious red team. Lynch recorded 37 assists and two service aces, while Busboom had 28 assists.
Playing all five games together, Rebholz and Schrad led the red team's offensive attack. Rebholz had 12 kills and seven blocks, and Schrad pounded 16 kills to go with a team-high 18 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Melissa Elmer had 10 kills and five blocks for the red team.
Saleaumua tallied a match-high 25 digs in split duty, tying her for match-high honors with freshman libero Amanda McCormick. Also playing for both teams, Westling had seven blocks. Dowling notched 19 digs. Freshman middle blocker Christina Houghtelling had 11 kills, and freshman outside hitter Dani Mancuso had 14 kills and 13 digs.
The seventh-ranked Huskers open the 2003 season next weekend at the Illinois State Tournament in Normal, Ill. Nebraska will face Clemson Friday at 5 p.m., Illinois Saturday at 10 a.m. and Illinois State Saturday at 7 p.m.
