Huskers Get First Road Win Over Wisconsin

Madison, Wis. ? Iman Haynes and Ashley Carter contributed their first goals of the season to lead the Nebraska soccer team to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Wisconsin Sunday afternoon in the Rocky Rococo Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wis.

"This was a good team win," Coach John Walker said. "We showed good resiliency and we had good contributions from everyone. It was a quality road win against a very good team."

Haynes notched the first goal of the contest and the fifth of her career at the 26:22 mark off a long corner kick that Lindsey Ingram saved and got to Nikki Baker who then crossed the ball back into Haynes for the score.

The Huskers took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but the teams were tied with four shots each.

Wisconsin knotted the score at 1-1 on a shot by Emily Kintzer at the 77:47 mark.

The NU underclassmen stepped up their game, and freshman Abby Penas got a penetrative pass into Carter, who dribbled around UW goalkeeper Stefani Szczechowski and buried the game-winning goal with less than two minutes remaining on the clock.

Husker goalkeeper Brooke Bredenberg posted seven saves and gave up one goal in 90 minutes of action, while Szczechowski grabbed one save and gave up two goals. Bredenberg is now 3-1-1 on the season.

Freshman Jessie Bruch once again played a stellar offensive game, launching four shots on the contest to lead the Huskers. Overall, Nebraska was outshot, 12-8, by the Badgers. UW also won the battle of corner kicks, 5-3.

The win improves Nebraska's overall record to 3-2-1 and drops Wisconsin to 4-2-1.

The Nebraska defense played a solid game, with two Husker defenders being named to the All-Tournament Team. Jenna Cooper was named the defensive MVP for the tourney, while Christy Harms (D) and Lindsey Ingram (MF) also garnered all-tournament team honors.

"It's been a rough couple of weeks for our team, so this was a big game for us," Walker said. "Early on, the older players showed strong leadership, and in the end it was the young players that came through for us. This was big for the girls' confidence. It was good to put in the work today and get the result."

Nebraska returns home after two consecutive weeks on the road to face Mississippi State Friday night and Murray State Sunday afternoon at the Abbott Sports Complex.
