Huskers Head South for Kansas Invitational

The Nebraska men's golf team competes in the Sunflower State for the second straight week, taking part in Kansas State's Colbert Hills Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday in Manhattan. Last week the Huskers finished 11th at the Kansas Invitational in Lawrence.

Action will begin with 36 holes on Monday, beginning with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The Colbert Hills Intercollegiate will conclude with the final 18 holes on Tuesday, also with a 9 a.m. start. The tournament will feature an eight-team field, headlined by national power Arizona State. The field also gives Nebraska an opportunity to compete against several district rivals, including host Kansas State.

The Husker lineup for the Colbert Hills Intercollegiate will be led by freshman Brady Schnell. The Millard West graduate has gotten his college career off to a flying start with three straight top-20 finishes, including an eighth-place showing at the Kansas Invitational last week. Schnell has a 72.6 stroke average and will play in the No. 1 spot this week.

Redshirt freshman Drew Reynolds has also started strong this fall, averaging 75.6 strokes per round. Reynolds is coming off a good showing at Kansas, where he posted three rounds of 74 or better. Reynolds will play in the No. 2 spot at Kansas State, followed by senior J.J. Sullivan, senior Chris Hartwig and sophomore Judd Cornell. Sophomore Matt Ellis will compete as an individual at Colbert Hills.

Nebraska finished fifth at the Colbert Hills Intercollegiate last season, finishing three rounds with a 925 team score at the demanding 7,525-yard, par-72 layout. Sullivan was Nebraska's top individual performer at the event last season, finishing in ninth place with a three round total of 228, including a final-round 74.

Huskers Finish 11th at Kansas Invite
Nebraska finished in 11th place earlier this week at the Kansas Invitational at Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence, Kan. The Huskers started the tournament strong with a 292 team score and stood in first place after the opening 18 holes. However, rounds of 302 and 296 dropped Nebraska off the pace in the 15-team field.

In the opening round, Nebraska counted four scores of 75 or better, including even par rounds from Drew Reynolds and J.J. Sullivan. Freshman Brady Schnell fired a three-under par 69 in Monday's second round, but NU had to count to scores of 78 and 81 in its 302 team total. NU rebounded in the third round with all five players under 78, but dropped three spots to 11th.

Schnell paced the Huskers individually, posting the third consecutive top-20 finish to open his collegiate career. Schnell's even-par 216 total left him in a tie for eighth place in the field. Redshirt freshman Drew Reynolds also performed well at Kansas, finishing with a 220 total and a tie for 21st position.

Kansas easily captured the team title at its own tournament completing three rounds at 855, to finish 17 shots ahead of North Texas. KU's Andrew Price posted a six-shot victory in the individual race.
