Fairway Club Invite Rained Out

The final round of the Fairway Club Invitational at Lincoln's Firethorn Golf Club was been canceled because of rain. The two-round totals from Monday's competition will be the final results, with Iowa State capturing the team title with a 581 total, six shots better than Illinois State and Akron. Nebraska finished in sixth place at 592. Akron's Blake Sattler and Tyrone Van Aswegen of Oklahoma City share the individual crown with two round totals of one-under-par 141.

Lincoln -- The Nebraska men's golf team completed two rounds of play on Monday at Lincoln's Firethorn Golf Club with a team total of 592, good for sixth place in the Fairway Club Invitational.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

 

The Huskers opened with a round of 298 in the morning, then improved four strokes to post a 294 in the afternoon session. <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Nebraska trails team leader Iowa State by 11 strokes heading into Tuesday morning's third and final round, but the Huskers are just five shots out of second place shared by Illinois State and Akron at 587.

 

The Cyclones surged to the lead with rounds of 289 and 292 on the par-71 Firethorn layout. Illinois State posted rounds of 295 and 292, while Akron rebounded from an opening 301 with a 286 in the second round to move up the leaderboard. NAIA power Oklahoma City is in fourth place at 588, while Southwest Missouri State rounds out the top five with a 590 team total. Creighton sits in 14th place in the tournament with a two-round total of 638.

 

Akron's Blake Sattler and Tyrone Van Aswegen of Oklahoma City share the individual lead with two round totals of one-under-par 141. Three golfers are a shot behind at 142, including Illinois State's Brian Anderson, who posted the day's low round with a four-under 67 in the afternoon.

 

Individually, Nebraska's top player is true freshman Brady Schnell who completed two rounds at 145, including an opening-round 69, good for a tie for ninth place. Schnell is playing as an individual in the tournament after being edged for the final spot in Nebraska's team lineup during qualifying last week.

 

Redshirt freshman Drew Reynolds was Nebraska's top performer among the five players counting toward the team score. Reynolds opened with a 70 and shot a 77 in the afternoon to sit in 12th place. J.J. Sullivan is tied for 26th place at 150, while Chris Hartwig and Judd Cornell are tied for 30th with two-round totals of 151. Freshman Thomas Bethel rounds out the Husker lineup with a score of 152, good for a tie for 34th place.
