Pascoe and Padden Pin Huskers to Victory

Lincoln -- Behind pins from junior Travis Pascoe and sophomore B.J. Padden, the seventh-ranked Nebraska wrestling team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 31-10 victory over 22nd-ranked Boise State Friday night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Leading by six points heading into the final three weight classes, Pascoe pinned Casey Phelps in 3:57 at 184 pounds to give NU a 22-10 lead. After Pascoe’s victory, Padden defeated 16th-ranked K.C. Walsh in 2:27 at 197 pounds. Padden, who wrestled last season at 184 pounds, improved to 3-0 on the year, winning all three of his matches by pin.

"I enjoy wrestling at 197 pounds a lot better," Padden said. "I can focus on wrestling rather than cutting weight and I’m a lot happier than at 184."

Top-ranked Jason Powell opened the dual for the Huskers on a high note at 125 pounds, defeating Clint Wolfley by major decision, 15-2. At 133 pounds, No. 14 Joey Malia was upset by No. 19 Scott Jorgensen, 12-10. Malia tied the match 10-10, but Jorgensen recorded a reversal with 46 seconds left to take a 12-10 victory.

Matt Murray followed the Malia loss with a 13-7 victory over Jesse Brock at 141 pounds. At 149 pounds, No. 7 Travis Shufelt fell behind 10-6 before tying the match at 11-11. With 14 seconds left in the second period, Shufelt scored a takedown before pinning Nick Budeski at the 4:48 mark.

At 157 pounds, 11th-ranked B.J. Wright was upset by Ben Cherrington, 6-4. Trailing 5-2 in the third period, Wright scored a reversal to cut into Cherrington’s lead but was unable to overtake Cherrington, who scored the the final point.

The last match of the night saw senior Nathan McClain defeat Jacob McGinnis, 8-1, at heavyweight. McClain was wrestling in place of an injured Mitch Manstedt, who suffered a knee injury during practice earlier in the week.

"Boise State is a well-coached team," Head Coach Mark Manning said. "They’re a physical team, which is good for us because we learned a lot about ourselves tonight."

The Huskers return to action next weekend when they take to the road for the first time with duals against 11th-ranked Hofstra and Rutgers in Hempstead, N.Y.
