The University of Nebraska wrestling team improved to 8-0 on the season posting three victories at the Nebraska Duals, Monday night at the NU Coliseum. The Huskers defeated Division II’s eighth-ranked Nebraska-Kearney, 46-0, 18th-ranked Chadron State, 45-0 and NAIA’s No. 13 Dana College, 44-3. On the night NU won 29 of 30 matches.
It was the first time since the 1995-96 season the Huskers recorded two shutouts in the same day.
The Huskers were led by junior B.J. Wright, who improved to 10-3 on the season posting two major decisions and a fall. Wright defeated UNK’s Jake Froscheiser via fall 46 seconds into the match before defeating Division II’s fifth-ranked Travis Peak, 13-3 and Scott Taylor of Dana College, 17-9.
"I think there’s a lot of good things going for us right now, " Wright said. "What we’ve accomplished so far is such a big deal to us. It means so much."
Sophomore 197-pounder B.J. Padden also had a strong performance defeating Division II’s sixth-ranked Jeff Sylvester, 15-11, before ousting second-ranked Jeff Ruscher of Chadron State, 6-4. In his final dual of the night, Padden scored a fall over Dana College’s fifth-ranked Wynn Fangmeier at the 4:23 mark in the second period.
Five other Huskers posted 3-0 marks on the day. Top-ranked Jason Powell won his opening match over Nebraska-Kearney’s Trevor Charbonneau before junior Jeremy Emerson took over at 125 pounds and posted two victories.
The lone Husker to suffer a defeat was Trevor Hill at 165 pounds, who lost to NAIA’s second-ranked Leister Bowling, 4-3. Tied at three heading into the final seconds, Hill was charged with a technical violation to give Bowling the victory.
"I saw a lot of agressiveness, a lot of takedowns," Head Coach Mark Manning said. "The biggest thing to me was to make sure the team was working on things that we were trying to get across to them, and yet still trying to stay focused."
The Huskers return to action, on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, when they travel to Rochester, Minn. to take on the tenth-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers at 4 p.m.
