Buoy Leads Huskers at Texas Invitational

Austin, Texas -- The University of Nebraska swimming and diving team recorded a pair of top-10 finishes in relay events at the Texas Invitational on Saturday night.

NU recorded impressive performances from its 400-meter relay teams. Freshmen Michelle Criss, Julie McCauley, Kate Wheeler and sophomore Alex King finished in fifth place in a time of 4:01.58, just ahead of senior Angie Matheu, juniors Diana Torres and Lauren Bailey and freshman Bailey Ingles who added a sixth-place showing in a time of 4:05.71.

In the diving well, freshman Amie Buoy took second place in the one-meter springboard competition, just four points short of winning the event.

NU also had strong swims in the individual events. Ingles placed 13th in the 200-meter butterfly, touching the wall in a time of 2:21.66. Also, sophomore Katrina Sandeberg took 13th in the 200-meter breaststroke, while Sophomore Lana Baker (17th, 200-meter breaststroke, 2:51.70) and Bailey (19th, 200-meter butterfly, 2:22.67) also placed among the top-20 in their events.

Head Coach Pablo Morales was pleased with the team’s performance.

"We saw a lot of mixed results, but overall the meet went very well," Morales said. "As the evening went on we began to improve and saw a lot of strong finishes."

The Texas Invitational is a U.S. Swimming Open Meet, allowing for unattached competitors to swim, therefore team results are not kept. In addition, the morning preliminary heats were contested in yards, while the evening finals were contested in long-course (50-meter) meters.

The Huskers return to action on Jan. 3 at the UCI Invitational in Irvine, Calif.
