Lincoln - The Nebraska swimming and diving team defeated Nebraska-Omaha, 198-93, on Saturday afternoon at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Pool. With the victory, the Huskers improved to 6-2 on the season, securing its first winning season since going 7-4 in 2001.
The Huskers were led by freshman Lauren Bailey who had three wins on the day, including a season best mark in the 1,650-yard freestyle, finishing in a time of 16:45.04. Bailey also touched the wall first in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 4:56.44. Bailey also swam well in the first of NU’s two exhibition events, finishing the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 4:28.36.
The Huskers won 13 events of the meet before exhibitioning the final two events, the 400-yard individual medley and the 200-yard freestyle relay.
NU Head Coach Pablo Morales was pleased with his team’s performance.
"There was definitely more energy behind our swims," Morales said. "I thought that we swam more aggressively like we needed to and took each race with great intensity. That’s what we look for at this point in the season."
Sophomore Amie Buoy scored solid points in the diving well for the Huskers, taking first place in both the three- and one-meter springboard contests. Buoy scored 261.59 points for the Huskers on the three-meter springboard and 287.55 points in the one-meter contest.
Freshman Mallory Keathley also won a pair of events for the Huskers. Keathley took first in the 100-yard backstroke contest (1:00.11) as well as the 100-yard butterfly contest (58.37).
Other individual event winners for the Huskers included freshman Kate Wheeler (200-yard freestyle,1:55.15), sophomore Lana Baker (100-yard breaststroke, 1:06.29), sophomore Courtney Petersen (200-yard butterfly, 2:11.77), freshman Michelle Criss (100-yard freestyle, 53.20), senior Angie Matheu (200-yard breaststroke, 2:25.77) and freshman Emilee Crawford (200-yard backstroke, 2:14.17).
The Huskers return to action when they host the Iowa State Cyclones in the Devaney Center Pool on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 1 p.m.
