Hattiesburg, Miss. -- The Husker men’s golf team rallied in the afternoon round and sits in eighth place after the first day of competition at Southern Mississippi’s Sam Hall Intercollegiate at Hattiesburg Country Club. The invitational is Nebraska’s first action of the 2004 spring season.
The Huskers opened the tournament with a team score of 302 in the morning round, but made a solid comeback in the afternoon round with a 290. Nebraska’s 592 total through two rounds places the Huskers in a tie for eighth place with McNeese State, which posted rounds of 598 and 594.
Nebraska is 19 shots behind team leader and host Southern Mississippi, which posted rounds of 285 and 288 for a 573 total. The Golden Eagles are followed by Stephen F. Austin (579), West Florida (581), Louisiana-Monroe (586), Louisiana-Lafayette (587), Wichita State (587), UNC-Greensboro (591), Nebraska and McNeese State.
Individually, Nebraska was led by sophomore Judd Cornell, who sits in an 11th place tie at 145. Cornell kept the Huskers afloat in the morning round with a one-under-par 71 and followed with a 74 in the afternoon session. Senior J.J. Sullivan is tied for 21st place at 147 after rounds of 75 and 72. Fellow senior Chris Hartwig posted rounds of 76 and 72 and his 148 total left him a tie for 26th place. True freshman Brady Schnell struggled to an 80 in the morning, but rebounded with an even-par 72 and sits in 49th place, while redshirt freshman Drew Reynolds posted rounds of 80 and 81 and is tied for 66th place at 161.
West Florida’s Fredeik Lundberg leads the individual race, after completing two rounds in seven-under par 137. The tournament concludes on Tuesday morning with the third and final round. Play begins at the Hattiesburg CC at 7:30 a.m.
