Houston, Texas -- Peaches James’ no-hitter capped off a superb day of pitching for Nebraska on day one of the Crowne Plaza Classic in Houston, Texas. It was the second no-hitter of the career, tying her for third most all time at NU.
James (3-1) was dominant against Houston in a 2-0 Husker victory. The reigning Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, James struck out 13 and only gave up one walk.
James’ performance came on the heels of freshman Ashley DeBuhr’s one-hit victory over Centenary earlier in the day. DeBuhr (1-1) allowed a single with two outs in the top of the fifth in Nebraska’s 8-0 victory over the Ladies.
"I thought Ashley pitched well and made some great adjustments from last weekend to this weekend," NU Head Coach Rhonda Revelle said.
"In the second game, I thought it all started with the dominance in the circle. Peaches and (catcher) Brittney Yolo really set the tone for us. We just hung in there on offense and kept working, and were able to put a couple runs across in the seventh.
"It was a good win against a good team."
Nebraska vs. Houston
Senior right hander Peaches James struck out 13 batters in tossing a no-hitter against the Cougars. James struck out the side in the third and fourth innings. It was the second straight game she has struck out at least 13 batters.
At the plate against Houston, Yolo was 2-for-3, including a leadoff single in the seventh that set the stage for the Huskers’ two-run inning. Senior Nicole Trimboli produced the game-winning RBI on her only hit, a single to right field.
Scoreless through six, Nebraska came through with two clutch two-out runs in the top of the seventh. Yolo got the Huskers started with a leadoff single up the middle. After Tacha fouled out, sophomore Jessica Yoachim reached on a fielder’s choice when Yolo was forced out at second. With two outs and a runner on first, sophomore Trisha Tannahill singled, advancing Yoachim to third. That set the stage for Trimboli, who is No. 6 on the all-time RBI chart at Nebraska. Trimboli laced a single past the first baseman to score Yoachim. Tannahill was able to come around from first after the shortstop bobbled the throw to second.
Nebraska vs. Centenary
Freshman right-hander Ashley DeBuhr (1-1) was stellar in only the second start of her career.
DeBuhr threw five innings of shutout ball, striking out six. She carried a no-hitter into the fifth, before surrendering a two-out single to Megan Hall. The Beatrice, Neb., native retired the Ladies in order in the second, third and fourth and had retired 11 in a row before Hall’s single.
At the plate, sophomore KoKo Tacha went 2-for-3 with four RBIs. With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Tacha homered to left to give Nebraska the 8-0 win. Junior Anne Steffan also recorded two hits and scored two runs and junior Sheena Lawrick was 1-for-3 with a triple.
Nebraska got on the board quickly, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first and sending nine batters to the plate. Trimboli lined out to right to start the game, and Steffan followed with an infield single. Steffan took second when no Ladies covered the bag. Junior Sheena Lawrick then tripled down the right field line to score Steffan, putting the Huskers up 1-0. Tannahill reached base via a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. On the play, Lawrick scored from third to make it 2-0. After freshman Jamie Waldecker lined out to left, NU started a two-out rally. After Tannahill stole third, she scored on a single by sophomore Katie Linke. Centenary made a pitching change and new pitcher Janis Kelley promptly hit freshman Carmen Kier with her first pitch to load the bases. After working the count to 3-2, freshman Devin Porter struck out to end the inning.
After Trimboli led off with a ground out to second, Steffan followed with her first double of the year. Lawrick grounded out to first before the Huskers started a furious two-out rally. With Steffan on third, Tannahill singled, scoring Steffan to make the score 4-0. NU then loaded the bases on a single by Waldecker and a walk to Linke. That brought up Tacha, who hit the first extra base hit of her career - a walk-off grand slam - that put Nebraska up 8-0 and gave the Huskers the win.
