Huskers in Sixth Place at Emerald Coast Collegiate

The <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Nebraska men’s golf team sits in sixth place among 14 teams after the first day of competition Saturday at the Emerald Coast Collegiate at Tiger Point Country Club in Gulf Breeze, Fla.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

 

The Huskers opened Saturday’s action with a 313 team score in the morning round and followed with a 311 in the second round for a two-round total of 624. The Huskers are 20 shots behind team leader and host West Florida, a power at the Division II level, who sits at 604 after rounds of 303 and 301. However, Nebraska is just six shots out of third place. Columbus State is in second place at 614, followed by Georgia College (618), Middle Tennessee State (621), Valdosta State (622) and Nebraska (624).

 

Individually, Nebraska was led by sophomore Judd Cornell who sits in a tie for seventh place after the first day of competition after a pair of 76s. Cornell’s 152 total places him four shots off the tournament lead held by West Florida’s Fredrik Lundberg. Senior J.J. Sullivan is tied for 19th place at 155 after the first day of action. Sullivan opened with an 80 in the opening round, but battled back into contention with a 75 in the afternoon.

 

Freshman Brady Schnell is tied for 30th at 158 after rounds of 77 and 81, while redshirt freshman Drew Reynolds is in a tie for 38th at 159 after an 80 and a 79. Chris Hartwig is tied for 53rd after posting rounds of 81 and 82 on Saturday. Husker freshman Thomas Bethel is competing as an individual and is also tied for 30th place after rounds of 80 and 78.

 

The tournament concludes with the final round on Sunday in Gulf Breeze, Fla.
