<?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Austin, Texas- The Nebraska swimming and diving team had a strong conclusion to the 2004 Big 12 Championships at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas finishing in fourth place in the contest with 420 points. In first place was Texas (964), followed by Texas A&M (762.5) and Kansas (503). <?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
NU saw another season-best swim from freshman Lauren Bailey in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Bailey touched the wall in 16:42.72, earning second place in the event just behind Texas swimmer Stephanie Anderson (16.34.12) and improving her best time from the UN-Omaha meet by more than three seconds (16.45.04). Also competing in the mile were freshman Kate Wheeler (4th, 16:52.80), sophomore Mackenzie Clark (5th, 16:54.96), freshman Casey Schnack (8th, 17:09.11), freshman Esmie Holderman (13th, 17:23.33) and sophomore Emily Becker (14th, 17:53.88).
In the diving well, sophomore Amie Buoy was again NU’s top finisher in the finals where she placed ninth on the platform with a score of 8.00, just ahead of fellow teammate sophomore Becky Johnson who scored 5.00 and finished 12th.
There were nine other Huskers who also competed in final heats on Saturday evening. In the 200-yard backstroke freshman Emilee Crawford (13th, 2:04.90), sophomore Danielle Erickson (16th, 2:05.90) and sophomore Courtney Peterson (18th, 2:06.90) all had strong swims. Swimming in the 100-yard freestyle for NU were senior Angie Matheu (16th, 51.32) and sophomore Alex King (23rd, 52.66). In the 200-yard breaststroke, finals swimmers for NU were sophomores Rachel Schlatter (11th, 2:18.05) and Lana Baker (17th, 2:24.34). In the 200-fly it was freshmen Mallory Keathley (10th, 2:05.64) and Bailey Ingles (11th, 2:02.52) who swam for the Huskers.
Nebraska’s head coach Pablo Morales was named co-swim head coach of the meet.
NU’s 400-yard freestyle relay (Matheu, King, Wheeler, Bailey) touched the wall in 3:30.55 to place fifth in the event for Nebraska.
