Huskers in 10th Place After Strong Second Round

Buckeye, <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Ariz.? The Nebraska men’s golf team fired a second round 289 to move up the leaderboard on Friday at the Steve Kerr Invitational at Sundance Golf Club in Buckeye, Ariz.  The Huskers’ second round score was the third-best of the round and pushed them into 10th place at 602 after a tough first round score of 313. <?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

 

Senior J.J. Sullivan and freshmen Brady Schnell and Drew Reynolds topped the Huskers competing as part of the team. All three completed two rounds at 151 and are tied for 36th. Senior Chris Hartwig completed two rounds at 152 and is tied for 42nd, and sophomore Judd Cornell rounded out the team field for the Huskers with a 154 to tie for 57th. Sullivan, Schnell and Cornell each bounced back from first round scores in the 80s with outstanding afternoon rounds. Sullivan fired a 70 in the second round, while Schnell posted a 71 and Cornell fired a 73.

 

Freshman Tom Bethel, competing as an individual in the tournament, was the top performer among all Huskers. Bethel opened the tournament with an 80, but fired a 66 in the second round and his two-round total of 146 places him a tie for 11th. His round of 66 in the second round tied for the day’s best round.

 

Texas El-Paso’s Dan Floyd sits in first place at the Invitational after firing a 69 in the first round and a 67 in the second for a two-round total of 136 to propel his team into 2nd place.  Colorado State is in first place with a team score of 575, followed by UTEP (581), Indiana (587), Iowa State (592), Denver (593) and Nevada (593).

 

The tournament concludes with the final round on Saturday morning at Sundance Golf Club.
