College Station, Texas ? Becky Breisch won her first outdoor meet of the season to lead the Nebraska track and field team Saturday at the College Station Relays.
Breisch threw the shot put 56-3 ? to take the relays title and finished ahead of teammate Leann Boerema, who won bronze with a toss of 50-9 ?, as they both qualified for the NCAA Midwest Regional in their first outdoor meet of the season. Redshirt freshman Jen Steiner was seventh with a throw of 47-7 ?.
In his first meet of the year, Artur Wszelaki took fourth place in the javelin throw with a mark of 226-9 to qualify for the regional championships. Teammate Colin Damas also qualified for the regional with a ninth-place throw of 208-6.
On the women’s side, freshman Kayla Wilkinson threw the javelin 147-8 to take sixth place and qualify for her first NCAA Regional Championship.
Senior Alissa Koerner won silver in the women’s pole vault, clearing 12-3 ? on the day, while Jessie Graff took fourth place with a height of 11-9 ?.
Tia DeSoto took sixth place in her first hammer throw competition of the year with a throw of 172-11, while Jamie Senkbile took seventh with her toss of 157-1.
In the men’s hammer throw, newcomer Issar Yahzbin was fourth with a regional-qualifying mark of 200-4. Tommy Donlin threw the hammer 176-4 for a sixth-place finish, while Adam Stevens was 10th (151-1).
On Friday, Kyle Goerl finished the men’s decathlon with 6,653 points and a sixth-place finish. Goerl ran a time of 15.32 in the 110-meter hurdles to open the day and cleared 13-11 ? in the pole vault for his big point events of the day.
Casie Witte completed the women’s heptathlon with 4,563 points for an 11th-place finish. Witte leaped 18-3 in the long jump to get off to a solid start on the second day and clocked a time of 2:44.26 in the 800 meters to conclude the heptathlon.
The Huskers will compete in the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson, Ariz., March 25-27, to kick off the outdoor season with a much larger contingent of competitors.
