The Nebraska men’s golf team fired rounds of 309 and 303 on Saturday at Tanglewood Resort in Pottsboro, Texas, leaving them with a 612 team total, good for five-shot lead in the Pepsi-Cola Invitational.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
The Huskers’ 612 total places them five shots in front of <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Texas State and Texas A&M-Commerce who are tied for second at 617. Oral Roberts is fourth at 621, followed by Western Illinois, Southwest Missouri and Belmont at 624. The Huskers opened the tournament with a first-round 309 which left them in fourth place, two shots off the lead. In the afternoon round, Coach Bill Spangler’s team made up the differential with a 303, the lowest team score of the day.
Freshman Tom Bethel continued his torrid play on Saturday to pace the Huskers. Bethel, playing in just his fifth collegiate tournament stands in fourth place at 151, following rounds of 75 and 76 on the 6,993-yard, par-72 layout. He is six shots out of the individual lead held by St. Louis’ David Perritt, who is at 145 after rounds of 69 and 76.
Four other Huskers are in the top 20 in the tournament, including sophomore Kent Schreiner who is in seventh place at 152 after rounds of 79 and 73. The Ogallala, Neb., native is competing as an individual in the Pepsi-Cola Invitational, his first collegiate competition. J.J. Sullivan is tied for ninth at 154 (78-76), and Judd Cornell is tied for 14th at 155 (83-72). Drew Reynolds (78-79, 157, tie 24th) and Brady Schnell (78-80, 158, tie 27th) round out the Huskers competing for the team, while Chris Hartwig is tied for 24th (74-83-157), while competing as an individual.
The tournament will conclude with 18 holes on Sunday at Tanglewood Resort.
