Huskers Set for Big 12 Title Run

Lincoln -- The fourth-ranked Nebraska wrestling team will travel to Ames, Iowa, this weekend for the 2004 Big 12 Championships. Action gets underway at the Hilton Coliseum on Saturday, March 6 at 11 a.m. with pigtail and first-round matches. The semifinals begin at noon to close out the first session. Consolation and third-place matches start at 4 p.m., with the finals scheduled for 7 p.m.

NU finished the regular season with a 19-3 record and is ranked second in the nation in all major wrestling polls. NU will bring nine ranked wrestlers to the conference tournament.

Headlining the Nebraska lineup are four grapplers that are ranked in the top five in their respective weight class. Top-ranked Jason Powell (125) brings a 20-1 record into the championships and will be looking for the second conference championships of this career and the Husker first since Bryan Snyder captured a crown in 2002. Powell was a champion as a redshirt-freshman in 2001 and finished third in 2002 and 03.

After a disappointing 2003 Big 12 Championships, second-ranked B.J. Padden looks to be the favored to capture the 197 pound conference championships as he enters the championships with a 4-0 record against Big 12 foes. Of Padden’s 22 wins, 10 have come via pin.

Junior Travis Shufelt was a runner-up last season and will look to challenge in a very difficult 149-pound weight class. Shufelt brings a 23-4 record into the meet, with 17 of those wins earning the Huskers bonus points.

Fourth-ranked Travis Pascoe (174) enters with a 24-3 record and is one of the favorites to claim his first conference championship. He will be challenged by defending national champion Jake Rosholt of Oklahoma State who defeated Pascoe by a score of 6-3 in Stillwater, Okla. on Feb. 8.

At 133 pounds, redshirt freshman Matt Keller is ranked ninth nationally and enters with a 23-9 overall record and a 2-2 mark against Big 12 foes. In a weight class that features five ranked grapplers, Keller is a strong contender to challenge top-ranked and three-time conference champion Johnny Thompson of Oklahoma State. Thompson won the only meeting between the two, 8-6 in overtime on Feb. 7.

Also eyeing possible berths in the NCAA Championships are junior Matt Murray (141), B.J. Wright (157) and Nathan McClain (HWT).

In addition to the top-three finishers in each weight class, six wild cards will be selected by the Big 12 Coaches to travel to the NCAA Championships, March 18-20 in St. Louis.
