Huskers 12th after Two Rounds of Big 12 Championships

The Nebraska men’s golf team rebounded from a disappointing 314 in the opening round with a 299 in Monday’s second round of the Big 12 Championships at Prairie Dunes Country Club in <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Hutchinson, Kan. Despite the 14-stroke improvement in the second round, Nebraska remained in 12th place after the first day of competition with a 613 team total.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

 

The Huskers team total is four strokes behind Texas A&M, who sits in 11th place at 609 after rounds of 304 and 305. Texas and Oklahoma State are tied atop the team race with two-round totals of 577. Texas held a three-shot lead after posting a 287 in the first round, but the Cowboys fired a 285, the day’s best round, in the afternoon to move into a tie for the top spot. Kansas State is in third place two shots behind the co-leaders at 579, while Oklahoma (587) and Kansas (592) round out the top five.

 

Individually, sophomore Judd Cornell was Nebraska’s top performer on Monday. The Millard West product posted a pair of 75s on the 6,598-yard Prairie Dunes layout and his 150 total left him a tie for 30th position. Freshman Tom Bethel opened with a 79, but rebounded with a 75 in the afternoon round. His 154 total left him in a tie for 47th after two rounds.

 

Senior Chris Hartwig posted Nebraska’s high round of the day with an 83 in the first round, but rebounded with NU’s low score of the day, posting a 73 in the second round. Hartwig’s 156 total left him in a tie for 53rd heading into Tuesday’s final round. Senior J.J. Sullivan was also at 156 after rounds of 80 and 76, while Drew Reynolds rounded out the Husker lineup in 58th place after rounds of 80 and 79.

 

Jason Hartwick of Texas owns a three-shot lead after posting rounds of 70 and 66 on Monday. Oklahoma State’s Alex Noren is at 139, followed by Kansas State’s Aaron Watkins (141) in third place. Kansas State’s A.J. Elgert, a Lincoln East graduate is in fourth place at 143.
