Hollister, Mo.-- The Nebraska men’s golf team completed its second straight strong tournament on Tuesday with a second-place finish at the Branson Creek Invitational in Hollister, Mo. The Huskers compiled a team score of 291 on Tuesday, giving Nebraska a three-round total of 870, second only to Oklahoma City.
Nebraska opened the tournament with rounds of 294 and 285 on Monday at the Branson Creek Golf Club to move into second place. Illinois State pushed the Huskers on Tuesday, but Nebraska held on to a one-stroke advantage over the third-place Redbirds. Oklahoma City comfortably captured the team title, posting a 274 on Tuesday and a three-round total of 842, 28 strokes in front of the Huskers.
Individually, a pair of Huskers tied for seventh in the tournament. Senior J.J. Sullivan fired the Huskers best round on Tuesday with a 70 on the par-71, 7,015-yard layout. Sullivan’s strong round allowed him to finish 54 holes with a 216 total. Freshman Drew Reynolds also finished at 216, including a round of 72 on Tuesday.
Freshmen Tom Bethel and sophomore Judd Cornell both finished at 220, good for a tie for 16th place. Bethel fired a 76 on Tuesday, while Cornell posted a 75 in the final round. Sophomore Kent Schreiner rounded out Nebraska’s team lineup in a tie for 37th place after his 74 on Tuesday left him with a 228 total. Two other Huskers competed as individuals in the tournament. Senior Chris Hartwig finished three rounds at 219, including a 71 on Tuesday, and finished tied for 14th. Freshman Brady Schnell posted a 76 on Tuesday and finished 54 holes with a 223 total, good for a tie for 23rd place.
The finish marked Nebraska’s second straight top-two finish this spring. The Huskers captured the team crown at the Pepsi-Cola Invitational in Pottsboro, Texas, on March 27-28. Nebraska continues its spring season next Monday and Tuesday, April 12-13, at the Indian Golf Classic in Jonesboro, Ark.
