Austin, Texas - Senior right-hander Peaches James recorded her sixth-straight shutout as the 19th-ranked Huskers beat the Texas Longhorns, 5-0, to pick up their 10th consecutive victory. The shutout was the 40th of James' career, setting new school record for career shutouts. James had been tied with Associate Head Coach Lori Sippel, who tossed 39 shutouts from 1985-88.
James was dominant against Texas, allowing only one hit in seven innings of work. She struck out 12 Longhorns, striking out the side in the third and fifth innings. Her one-hitter was also her fifth one-hitter of the season. Texas' leadoff hitter Amber Hall reached on a bunt single in the bottom of the first for the Longhorns' only hit of the game.
In shutting out the second-best hitting team in the Big 12, James extended her scoreless streak to 42.1 innings. As a staff, Nebraska pitchers have now thrown seven consecutive shutouts and haven't allowed a run in 49.1 innings. The seven straight shutouts mark the second-longest streak in school history. NU recorded nine consecutives shutouts during the 1984 season.
Offensively, NU used a pair of two-run doubles to take a 4-0 lead. In the top of the first, freshman Jamie Waldecker doubled to score junior Anne Steffan and sophomore Trisha Tannahill. Tannahill then delivered her own two-run double in the fourth, scoring sophomore Jessica Yoachim and senior Nicole Trimboli. James scored the Huskers' final run when Texas' shortstop couldn't handle Yoachim's ground ball.
Trimboli finished the game 2-for-4 and moved into a tie for fifth place in school history with the 327th total base of her career.
With its two first-inning runs, NU improved to 16-1 this season when scoring in the first inning.
"Our offense set the tone right from the get-go and really made a difference in the game," NU Head Coach Rhonda Revelle said. "Our offense took the pressure off of our defense."
"We put pressure on their defense all night and that really allowed Peaches to settle in. I thought that Peaches got stronger as the game went along."
With the win, Nebraska (28-11) improved to 7-0 in the Big 12, while Texas (18-16, 0-6) fell to 0-12 in 2004 against ranked teams. James, the reigning USA Softball and NFCA National Player of the Week, picked up her 22nd victory of the season against only five losses. Christina Gwyn (6-9) took the loss for the Longhorns.
The Huskers wrap-up their two-game series with the Longhorns tomorrow at Noon. Live stats for the game will be available on Huskers.com.
