Thirty-six teams participated in the third annual Julie Geis Memorial Golf Tournament held last Friday at Wilderness Ridge Golf Course in Lincoln. Proceeds from the event totaled $40,000 and will work toward endowing the Julie Geis Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded annually to a member of the Nebraska softball team.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
Katie Linke, who will be a junior next season, was honored as this year’s Julie Geis Memorial Scholarship recipient.
“It was a heart-warming event,” NU Head Coach Rhonda Revelle said. “The event is so much more than a fundraiser. It’s about everybody getting together and making a positive contribution in Julie’s name and in her memory.”
Geis, who was killed in the September 11th attack on the World Trade Center, was a four-year letterwinner for Nebraska from 1976 from 1979. Once the scholarship is fully endowed, it ensures that both the scholarship and Julie Geis live on forever with the Nebraska softball program.
The goal of this year’s event was to crack the halfway point of the $250,000 it takes to fully endow the scholarship. Thanks to a great turnout, that goal was reached and approximately $132,000 has been raised to date.
In addition to a round of golf, participants also enjoyed dinner, silent and live auctions and a special appearance by Julie’s mother, Betty.
The Nebraska softball program also announced the date of next year’s event. The fourth annual Julie Geis Memorial Golf Tournament will take place on Sunday, Aug. 14, at Wilderness Ridge Golf Course. Sponsorships are available for the event. For more information on becoming a sponsor or making a contribution to the scholarship fund, please contact Anita (A.J.)
