Nebraska Fights Back for 4-2 Win

Lincoln - The Nebraska soccer team scored four unanswered goals to erase a 2-0 deficit and defeat the Creighton Bluejays, 4-2, on Sunday night in front of 790 fans at the Abbott Sports Complex.

Three Huskers found the back of the net for the first time in their career. Junior Katie Bunkers, sophomore Tanya Dennis and freshman Jetta Sadusky each tallied their first goals for NU. Nebraska improved to 1-1-0 on the season, while Creighton dropped to 0-2-0.

Nebraska Head Coach John Walker was pleased with how his team responded in the second half.

"The second half was a much better performance," Walker said. "It showed our character and resolve to come back and win the game."

Creighton was the aggressor early on, taking a 2-0 lead just over 25 minutes into the game. Chelsea Mackenzie pefectly placed a 35-yard free kick into the top left corner of the net at 26:52 to put the Bluejays on the board first. Frannie Hylok scored nearly 1:30 later, beating NU sophomore goalkeeper Katie Wright from 35 yards out.

Leading 2-0, things looked good for Creighton, which had won 15 consecutive games when scoring two or more goals and was 66-1-2 all time when scoring two or more goals.

Nebraska was able to cut the deficit to one at 29:59 when junior Nikki Baker scored from five yards out off an assist from senior Lindsey Ingram.

After trailing 2-1 at halftime, the Huskers rallied for three goals in the second half. Dennis recorded the equalizer, collecting the ball and beating Creighton's Stacy Severa from 25 yards out 20 minutes into the half.

Bunkers put Nebraska ahead 7:35 later. The Huskers won a corner kick and sophomore Brittany Timko sent a beautiful ball to the back post where Bunkers was waiting to head it into the goal. NU closed out the scoring at 84:26 when Sadusky scored off a rebound.

Following a Creighton foul, senior Brooke Bredenberg took a free kick from 25 yards out. Bredenberg hit the crossbar with her kick and Sadusky was there to clean up and secure Nebraska's first win of the season.

For the game, Nebraska outshot Creighton 22-14 and put 10 shots on goal to Creighton's nine. NU also had a decisive advantage in corner kicks, blanking the Bluejays 11-0.

Nebraska is home again next weekend for a pair of games. The Huskers will host Eastern Illinois at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3 before hosting Purdue at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 5.
