The Huskers stood in fourth place after one round, three strokes behind team leader Southern Mississippi who opened with a 305 in windy and hot conditions in Lincoln. Southwest Missouri and Drake are tied for second just a single shot back at 306.
Individually, Southwest Missouri’s Austin Hackett opened with a one-under 70 on the 6,762-yard, par-71 Firethorn layout. Hackett’s round gave him a two-shot lead over Nebraska’s Drew Reynolds, who is competing as an individual. Nebraska’s Judd Cornell is third after a 73, while four other golfers carded 74s in round one.
True freshman Chris Bruening opened with a 75 on Monday for Nebraska, while Ryan Lenahan and Kent Schreiner each posted 80 and Brady Schnell rounded out the team lineup with an 82.
Action is continuing into the evening at Firethorn as the 67-player field is completing the second round of the 54-hole tournament. The final round of the Fairway Club Invitational is set for Tuesday morning. The tournament marks the start of Nebraska’s fall schedule.
