Lincoln - The Nebraska men’s golf team posted the day’s best round with a second-round 299 to surge to a 10-shot lead after 36 holes at the Fairway Club Invitational at Lincoln’s Firethorn Golf Club. The Huskers had opened with a 308 in the opening round as the 67-player field battled hot and windy conditions on Monday.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
<?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Nebraska’s two-round 607 total is 10 shots better than Southern Miss who sits in second place and 12 strokes in front of Wyoming. Drake (621) and Northern Illinois (622) round out the top five, while Creighton is tied for 10th place at 649.
Individually, Nebraska sophomore Drew Reynolds opened a four-shot lead with a 146 total, following rounds of 72 and 74. Reynolds, who is competing as an individual in the tournament, is four strokes in front of Southern Miss’ Danny Dennis, who sits at 160 after rounds of 74 and 76.
Two other Huskers are among a group of five players tied for third place at 151. Junior Judd Cornell opened with a 73, before firing a 78 in the second round. Fellow junior Kent Schreiner is also at 151, after rebounding from a first-round 80 with a 71 in the second round. Rounding out the Husker starting five are Ryan Lenahan at 153 (tie, 12th), Chris Bruening at 155 (tie, 18th) and Brady Schnell who sits in 30th place at 159.
Husker sophomore Tom Bethel is also competing as an individual and carded the day’s low round with a 69 in the second round to respond from an opening 83. His 152 total places Bethel in a tie for eighth place.
The 67-player field battled winds in excess of 30 miles per hour and temperatures in the low 90s throughout the day on Monday. The field averaged 80.38 strokes over the 36 holes on Monday.
The Fairway Club Invitational concludes on Tuesday with the final round of play at Firethorn Golf Club.
