The Nebraska men’s golf team posted a 301 team score on Tuesday in the final round of the Kansas Invitational at Alvamar Golf Club, and finished three rounds of play at 888, good for a fifth-place finish in the 13-team field. <?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
The Huskers opened the day in fifth place, seven shots off the lead, and were unable to make up ground. Host <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Kansas sprinted to the team title on the strength of a final-round 287, giving the Jayhawks a three-round total of 877, seven shots in front of runner-up Kansas State. Day one leader Texas-San Antonio finished third at 882, followed by Houston at 884 and Nebraska at 888.
Individually, Nebraska’s top finisher was sophomore Brady Schnell who posted a 72 on Tuesday to complete three rounds at 220, good for a tie for 12th place. Junior Judd Cornell added a 77 on Tuesday to his rounds of 70 and 74 on day one to finish at 221 and tie for 17th place. Sophomore Drew Reynolds, who competed as an individual, also finished at 221 after posting a 74 on Tuesday.
The remainder of the Husker team lineup consisted of Ryan Lenahan who finished in a tie for 23rd at 223 after a 77 on Tuesday, followed by Chris Bruening (75, 227, tie 35th) and Tom Bethel (78, 233, tie 54th).
Kansas’ Kevin Ward won the individual title by defeating Kansas State’s Matt VanCleave in a sudden death playoff. Both golfers finished 54 holes with four-under-par 212 totals on the par-72, 6,950-yard layout.
Nebraska is next in action at the Ron Moore Invitational next Monday and Tuesay in Brighton, Colo. The event is hosted by the University of Denver.
