Lincoln - Sophomore Tanya Dennis scored two goals and fellow sophomore Brittany Timko notched three assists as the Nebraska soccer team defeated Eastern Illinois, 4-0, on Friday in front of 548 fans at the Abbott Sports Complex.
Nebraska (2-1-0) used an aggressive offensive attack to defeat the Panthers (1-2-0). For the game, the Huskers outshot Eastern Illinois 24-11.
"There was a lot of good play tonight," NU Head Coach John Walker said. "We were a little sloppy at times, but obviously anytime you win 4-0, you're doing something right."
Dennis put NU ahead 1-0 at 30:48, beating the keeper from 15 yards out. Nebraska was unable to find the back of the net for the rest of the first half, before exploding for three goals in the final 45 minutes.
Senior Lindsey Ingram scored her first goal of the season to increase the Huskers' lead to two goals. Timko sent in a cross from the far side of the field and Ingram was able to control it in the box and beat the keeper from five yards out.
Just 5:10 later, Dennis scored for the second time. Timko took a shot that bounced off the crossbar, where Dennis was waiting to control it and put it in the back of the net to give NU a 3-0 lead. Nebraska capped off a furious seven-minute flurry with its final goal of the night.
Timko sent a free ball to the middle of the box where senior Brooke Bredenberg was able to get just enough of the ball to beat the Eastern Illinois defense.
After her great night, Timko finished just one assist shy of tying the school record for assists in a game.
Nebraska returns to action at 1 p.m. on Sunday when it hosts Purdue at the Abbott Sports Complex.
