Lincoln - On her 19th birthday, sophomore Brittany Timko capped an outstanding weekend with two goals as the Nebraska soccer team posted its second consecutive shutout in a 3-0 win over Purdue in front of 293 rain-soaked fans at the Abbott Sports Complex.
Timko’s two goals came after she recorded three assists in Friday’s 4-0 win over Eastern Illinois. She totaled seven points this weekend and now leads the team with eight points for the season. With the win, Nebraska (3-1-0) has won three games in a row since a 1-0 season-opening loss to top-ranked North Carolina. Purdue slipped to 2-2-0 with the loss.
NU Head Coach John Walker was pleased with the way his team played against the Boilermakers, who advanced to the third round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament.
"I’m very happy with our performance," Walker said. "Purdue’s a good team and we looked like an experienced team today and did very well in the first half."
Junior Nikki Baker put Nebraska on the scoreboard in a hurry, scoring just 53 seconds into the game. Baker beat Purdue goalkeeper Maureen Carey to a ball outside of the box and fired a shot into the back of the net, beating two defenders. The school record for quickest goal is 37 seconds, held by Baker.
Timko notched her first goal of the game at 17:04, scoring off an assist from senior Lindsey Ingram. Timko took an excellent pass from Ingram and beat Carey with a shot to the far post from 10 yards out to give Nebraska a 2-0 lead.
Going against a strong wind in the second half, the Huskers managed only one goal. Timko displayed her accuracy with a perfectly placed ball in the top corner of the net to give NU its 3-0 victory. Timko, a native of Coquitlam, B.C., tied her career bests with two goals and four total points.
In goal, sophomore Katie Wright notched her second consecutive shutout. Wright, a native of Mission Viejo, Calif., has not allowed a goal in more than 242 minutes.
Nebraska remains home again next weekend. The Huskers will face Pacific at 7 p.m. on Friday before hosting Stanford at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
