Nebraska Set for Squire Creek Invitational

The Nebraska men's golf team continues its fall campaign with a trip south to participate in the Squire Creek Invitational, hosted by Louisiana Tech University. The tournament will be played next Monday and Tuesday at the Squire Creek Golf Club in Choudrant, La.

The 17-team field will open play with two rounds on Monday, beginning with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. The final 18 holes are set for Tuesday at the par-72, 7,105-yard layout.

Nebraska is entering the latter portion of its fall schedule, as the Squire Creek Invitational is the fifth of six fall tournaments for the Huskers. Nebraska finished fifth or higher in each of its first three fall tournaments, before a ninth-place showing at last week's Xavier Invitational. The Huskers closed the tournament in strong fashion with a final-round score of 286, including a season-low individual round of 66 by Judd Cornell.

Eight teams in the 17-team field are ranked in the nation's top 100, according to the GolfChannel.com's collegiate rankings. Texas-Arlington is the top-ranked team in the field, checking in at No. 27, followed by Houston at No. 38 and Stephen F. Austin in 53rd position. Nebraska is next in line, as the Huskers are ranked 63rd nationally according to the Golf Channel.

The Huskers continue to be paced by Cornell, who is off to a strong start to his junior season. Cornell's 66 in the final round of the Xavier Invitational bettered his previous career low by three strokes. Cornell is averaging a team-best 72.3 stroke average, 3.3 strokes better than his final 2003-04 stroke average. Nine of Cornell's 12 tournament rounds this fall have been 73 or lower, and the Millard West product is ranked 86th in the latest Golf Channel national player rankings.

Sophomores Brady Schnell, Tom Bethel and Drew Reynolds continue to be solid complements to Cornell in the Huskers' lineup, as they all boast stroke averages of 75.3 or lower. Cornell, Schnell and Reynolds all participated in last season's Squire Creek Invitational, helping the Huskers to an 11th-place finish. Reynolds was Nebraska's top finisher at the Squire Creek Invite last season, as his 231 total was good for a tie for 33rd place.

Following the Squire Creek Invitational, NU will conclude its fall schedule on Nov. 1-2 at the 49er Collegiate Classic in Charlotte, N.C.

Xavier Invitational Recap

Nebraska finished ninth in the 19-team Xavier Invitational earlier this week at the Oasis Golf Club in Loveland, Ohio. Low scores were the norm at the event, including by Judd Cornell, who finished three rounds of play at eight-under par 208. Cornell's final total left him in fourth place. He closed the tournament with a career-low round of 66 to help Nebraska to a 286 team score in the final round.

The Huskers opened the tournament with a round of 300 and posted a 293 in the second round to sit in 13th place after two rounds of action. Individually, Tom Bethel was Nebraska's second-best finisher with a 222 total, good for a tie for 41st place.
