Lincoln - The 2004-05 Nebraska swimming team and alumni from as far back as 1947 participated in the third annual Nebraska Alumni meet at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Pool on Saturday morning.
Bucky Greenberg, a Nebraska swimmer in 1947-48 was the oldest competitor in a fun event that saw the alumni defeat the current Huskers by a score of 114-88.
Alex King and Betsy Grover led the Huskers with first-place finishes in the 100- and 50-yard butterfly races. It was the first time either competitor had competed in those events as Coach Pablo Morales experimented with his swimmers, viewing their strengths in events they don’t normally compete in.
Greg Divis, a former Nebraska I-back in the mid-1980s, led the alumni with three individual wins. Trevor Corry and Mike Irvin each won two events whlie Steve Wiltgen and Barrett Brandon won one respectively.
Michelle Schmerbauch, a volunteer assistant coach for Nebraska, also competed for the alumni as the Huskers are currently preparing for a tough meet with Truman State in two weeks.
"The girls stepped up and trained hard this week," Morales said. "At this point in the season we are trying to build the high intensity race energy. We had a lot of hard work and hard training this week, but we don’t want to lose that competitive edge so its good that our girls stood up on the blocks and raced today."
A total of 12 alums returned for the meet, including California native Doug Garland. NU assistant coach Doug Humphrey, who swam for the Huskers from 1992-1995 also competed in the event.
"We hope this continues in the future. It is good to see the history of Nebraska swimming when they come out and compete with us," said sophomore Bailey Ingles.
The Huskers will continue to train hard as they prepare for the home opener against Truman State on Nov. 13. The contest against the defending 1-AA national champions is set to start at 1 p.m. at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Pool.
